Starting the penalty shootouts with a miss, Russian Federation could not save their World Cup dreams as Ivan Rakitic scored the deciding kick that saw Croatia through to the semifinal where they will face England.

Russis scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minutes through Denis Cheryshev who was assisted by Artem Dzyuba to send the home fans into wide jubilation.

"One of the most important tasks for our team is to contain Modric, because he is a leading player in the Croatian team".

Both sides were probing for the second goal in the closing minutes of the first stanza, but they went into the dressing room deadlocked at 1-1.

The regulation time ended 2-2 before Croatia sealed their qualification to the last four of the tournament winning on penalties.

Vida came unmarked in the middle of the penalty area and his header managed to bounce through traffic and roll into the net to give the Croatians the advantage in the 101st minute.

Fernandes scored off Alan Dzagoev's free kick in the 115th minute, making the home crowd go insane and restoring faith at the time, when it appeared a semifinal berth was slipping away.

Earlier on Saturday, Team England also cleared the quarterfinal round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 win over Sweden and is now set to meet Croatia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on July 11. According to a statement from the Federation Internationale de Football Association press service, the fine is related to an incident in which members of the Croatian national team were seen drinking "non-authorized beverage products", that is, drinks that were not officially approved as part of the sponsorship deal for the World Cup.
