Manchester United tell Jose Mourinho to develop players at Old Trafford?

Interest from Barcelona means that he may not be a Manchester United player for much longer, but his contributions to the club should not be underestimated.

The Red Devils host Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday in the Premier League's opener and Mourinho had already looked short on options due to the club's World Cup players.

It was around five hours before deadline that United were linked with Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin, the club cited as having made an approach for the Uruguayan. Now I want to go all the way, I want to fight for everything.

Ayr-born Burley, who has 46 caps for Scotland added: "Clearly nowhere near enough has been done to bridge the points gap with Manchester City [the English Premiership champions] from past year".

Harry Maguire was a genuine target, and although no progress was ever made with Leicester, United are still admirers of the England player.

Burley, who moved to the USA in 2013 to work for ESPN said United might have had "half a chance" had they they had brought in Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld and Inter Milan's Croatian World Cup finalist Ivan Perisic.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes explained what it would take for Mourinho to stand down as the Red Devils boss at the end of the Premier League season.

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to these first couple of matches - maybe three matches because after Spurs (and Burnley on August 27 and September 1 respectively) there is (a) national team (break) and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better".

Another commented: "You need to replace Jose, Eric". I'm going to enjoy this season. You have to try your best to get points and even with the difficulties that we had with our pre-season, now I don't think is the time to be speaking about that.

Contrary to current belief though, Mourinho has been fairly successful in the transfer window in his two years at Manchester United and has built perhaps the strongest side Old Trafford has seen since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.
