In Recordings, Nunes Says Rosenstein Impeachment Would Delay Kavanaugh Confirmation

Remember, while it's Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein who has the power the fire Mueller right now, Trump also has the constitutional power to direct repeal of a regulation that the attorney general alone may fire a special counsel. At one point, you could hear Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers chiming in.

The audio was recorded by a member of the progressive group "Fuse Washington", and played on MSNBC Wednesday.

Nunes has been a vocal supporter of Trump, and his oversight of the House Intel Committee's own Russian Federation probe was widely seen as a counter-investigation to Mueller's inquiry - largely because of Nunes' belief that some prosecutors on Mueller's team were politically biased against the president.

"So if we actually vote to impeach, OK, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up", he said, explaining that it could take away from other priorities of Congress. Sessions said previous year that he would keep his distance from inquiries related to the 2016 election owing to his role in Trump's campaign - a move that has frustrated the president, leading him to blame his own attorney general for the "Russian Witch Hunt Hoax".

Nunes suggested that midterms and the time-table for confirming a new Supreme Court Justice were reasons why the impeachment hadn't happened.

"The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is supposed to be an impartial investigator who follows the facts wherever they may lead", said cybersecurity reporter Eric Geller on Twitter in response to the recording.

Members of McMorris Rodgers' team told KREM 2 that there were no conversations at the private fundraiser of impeachment plans, but rather they were speaking to the process of impeachment.

"If Sessions won't unrecuse and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes says. But, basically, what they're saying here is this is a media invention against Mr. Nunes. He added, "so it's not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein".

"It's a matter of timing", Nunes said. I mean, so, I don't think you're gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues. So that's part of why, I don't think you have, you're not getting from, and I've said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached. "The question is the timing of it right before the election".

"If [Jeff] Sessions won't un-recuse, and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes said, according to the audio.

The same official said local party officials believe there is still time to choose a new candidate to get that person's name onto the ballot for the November 6 election.
