Sen. John McCain dies after battling brain cancer

He was admitted earlier that month to Walter Reed National Military Center for treatment of side effects from chemotherapy and radiation to beat glioblastoma, a terminal and aggressive form of brain cancer. He says McCain's "dogged patriotism and passion for country" made him an inspiration.

"Of all of the things that have happened in this man's life, of all of the times that his life could have ended in the ways it could have ended, this (cancer) is by far one of the least threats to him and that's kind of how he views it", his son, Jack McCain, told the Arizona Republic in January.

"I didn't like it, but at the same time when you are in a war and you are captured by the enemy, you can't expect to have tea", McCain said.

It was McCain's second run at the presidency; he lost the GOP nomination to Bush in 2000.

The decorated politician's family said they are "immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the past year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers".

"John McCain was about more than politics".

"All that I am is thanks to him". McCain was one of ten Senate Republicans to vote in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that would bar employers from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity and was a vocal opponent of Arizona's proposed "license to discriminate" bill. "Rosalynn and I extend our honest condolences to Senator McCain's family and to the people of Arizona whom he represented so forthrightly for so many years". McCain is also known for enduring more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. For the 2008 election, McCain once again made a bid for the White House, but was defeated by then Democrat Senator Barack Obama. McCain gained a reputation as a lawmaker who was willing to stick to his convictions rather than go along with party leaders, according to The Associated Press.

McCain's military pedigree and independent streak won respect during the race but his choice of the unqualified Palin as running mate - apparently created to appeal to Christian evangelicals who deserted him in 2000 - damaged his credibility. A friendship struck between John McCain, the former POW, and John Kerry, the former anti-war protester, helped lead to America's restoring relations with Vietnam, where US involvement in the war ended up tearing apart our own country. Trump did not mention McCain or the health care vote in a speech Friday night at a fundraising dinner in Ohio.

In 2016, McCain took part in a celebration of a new initiative aimed at curing cancer by 2020. I am blessed and humbled by our friendship. In the Senate, he was a mentor to so many senators: he taught us how to work with leaders on the world stage, and he taught us how to work with each other regardless of party back at home. His wife and other family members were with him. In politics, he fell short of his greatest ambition.

He has always been surrounded by strong women-his wife and my friend Cindy, his mom, and his daughters.

"My country saved me". "I heard people scream in his face, holding him responsible for the deaths of POWs". "He truly is an American hero, there's no doubt about it ..." "Karen and I are praying for Senator John McCain, Cindy and their family this weekend", Pence tweeted. He loves his country. "He lived by his creed every day". But, to me, more than anything, John was a friend.
