19 fall ill on Emirates flight

The airline and the New York City mayor's office said 19 people were confirmed ill.

AS many as 100 passengers and crew reported feeling ill during an Emirates flight from Dubai to NY, with health workers evaluating them as the plane sat on the tarmac of JFK International Airport, authorities said.

According to CBS News, the plane was held back from the terminal after several passengers on board reported feeling sick.

Phillips was among the first to suggest that the patients' symptoms were "pointing to the flu".

The plane reportedly was quarantined.

Emirates Flight 203 arrived from Dubai around 9:30 a.m. with approximately 520 people on board.

An airliner from Dubai with 10 passengers and crew members who were hospitalized with flu-like symptoms was carrying 1990s rapper Vanilla Ice.

ABC News reports that the pilot raised concerns prior to landing that some of the passengers were coughing and experiencing high temperatures. Three passengers and seven crew members went to hospitals, and nine other passengers medically evaluated at the scene were released afterward, Dubai-based Emirates said.

Emirates Airline initially said at least 10 passengers had unspecified illnesses on the flight, but it is unclear why there is a wide disparity in numbers.

'On arrival at JFK, as a precaution, they were immediately checked by local health authorities and those needing medical attention will be attended to.

"The passengers - except for the 12 affected - are in the process of being released", it added. While it's unclear at this point exactly what made almost 20% of the passengers feel so ill, NBC reports that the flight from Dubai made a stop in Mecca, where there is an ongoing flu outbreak.

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey did not immediately respond to an AFP request to comment.
