Twitter Reacts to Browns Decision to Release Josh Gordon

Team doctors examined Gordon, and in addition to a hamstring issue, there was concern that perhaps he had relapsed and was struggling with his substance use again.

Gordon has been suspended for a total of 56 games in his seven NFL seasons, 55 of which were league bans for positive drug and alcohol tests.

Josh Gordon's rocky six-year experiment with the Cleveland Browns will end, as the team announced its plan to release or trade their star wide receiver.

Josh Gordon's tenure with the Cleveland Browns will likely go down as one of the most riveting, mercurial and ultimately tragic sagas in the city's colorful sports history, but that doesn't mean the wide receiver hasn't seen his last National Football League snap.

"For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally, and wanted the best for him", Dorsey said in the statement, "but unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward".

Gordon returned to the team days prior to the preseason finale after spending almost a month tending to those personal matters.

Earlier Saturday, the Browns had downgraded Gordon from questionable to out for the Saints game, with a hamstring injury. Josh played week 1 in the tie game against the Steelers, making a single catch for a TD.

Schefter reports that Gordon hurt his hamstring at a promotional shoot, not a team practice.

The Browns selected Gordon in the second round of the 2012 Supplemental Draft. Additionally, thanks to some interesting service time rules, Gordon would immediately hit free agency rather than go through waivers if the Browns cut him loose. Later that season, his suspension was reduced and he played in five games.
