5 people, 3 of them infants, stabbed at NYC day care center

Three babies and two adults were stabbed at a home-based daycare centre in New York City on Friday, leaving one child with serious injuries, police said.

All of the injured were taken to area hospitals in critical but stable condition.

The victims include a 13-day-old newborn, a 22-day-old infant and a 33-day-old baby along with two adults; a 63-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

A suspect is in custody, a 52-year-old woman who was found unconscious on the basement floor of the center with self-inflicted wounds to her wrists.

A father was stabbed in the leg and a female employee suffered several stab wounds to the torso.

The motive in the 3:50 a.m. attack was unclear, police spokesman Lt. Thomas Antonetti said Friday. A butcher's knife and meat cleaver were found at the scene.

Nine babies and their parents were at the home when the stabbings happened, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Local elected officials said it appeared it was an unlicensed facility for new mothers and their babies to convalesce for a month, in keeping with Chinese tradition.

"We have seen some paperwork indicating that it is a day care", Holmes said, adding the documents "indicated that they were a nursery".

"OCFS is saddened by this horrific situation and investigating it as a possible illegal operation", the agency's statement said.

He said he had no other details of the attack. Her relationship with the children wasn't immediately clear.
