Not everyone on social media was thrilled by the reveal.
"This was only a screen test and even if they'll ended up using this looks, it'll probably be the first main act of the movie and not the final look", one Instagrammer wrote.
His Joker look is more towards the usual clown look instead of the slightly decaying air given off by Heath Ledger's version. After all, The Joker is Batman's first and biggest mistake, it only makes sense for him to have a small cameo.
Joker is set to hit theatres October 5. And then people finally saw what he looked like.
Not much else is known about the film, as it's still early in development.
Filming for the movie kicked off last week where Phoenix was pictured on set as Arthur Fleck.
Decked out in the classic pale face and smeared blue and red face paint, Phoenix's Joker takes "clown creepy" to a whole new level. Director Todd Phillips gave fans another glimpse at star Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur, hero/villain of the origin story Joker - this time in full makeup. This could just be coincidence, but if not, and with a separate Joker standalone movie planned with Jared Leto, could this be an origin story focused around the Joker we see in The Dark Knight trilogy? Phillips teamed up with Scott Silver (8 Mile) to write a script described as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".
