Chris Evans says 'farewell' to Captain America role

He continued: "Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor".

He has played the Marvel superhero since Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.

Given the particular high stakes of Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled follow-up, it seems that Rogers might meet his demise while trying to save the universe from Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.

Of the greenlit sequels we know of so far, Spider-Man: Far From Home will follow Avengers 4 and until recently the Guardians of the Galaxy threequel was set for production before director James Gunn was sacked.

Sure, Evans could simply be saying a heartfelt thank you to everyone on set, but we doubt it.

In his tweet, Evans writes, "Officially wrapped on Avengers 4". Including, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and the upcoming Avengers 4, along with numerous cameos in other MCU films. "And then we'll go back into the worldwide tour, we'll go on tour". (God, it feels like it's been going on for so much longer than that.) Let's at least hope that the final Avengers movie is a fitting last call for Evans' work as the character.

"Then you guys will get the second instalment".

Whether or not this confirms his fate in the follow-up to this year's Avengers: Infinity War is up for debate.

We'll all learn how this saga ends when Avengers 4 premieres in theaters on May 3, 2019. Let us know your thoughts and theories in the comments below!
