Judge blares 'New York, New York,' as Red Sox head to Bronx

With every bat that met ball was done so with alarming velocity, Price lasted just 1.2 innings and took the loss in an atmosphere squelching 6-2 defeat to the hated New York Yankees. The Yankees' were 53-28 there during the regular season, the second-best home record behind Boston's 57-24. He jumped on the first pitch, a knuckleball from Tim Wakefield that didn't move enough, and smashed it into the left-field stands for a walk-off home run that sent the Yankees to the World Series.

If the Red Sox lose the third game, then they will be staring elimination in the face for the next one and they would have to make a tough decision.

The bombing began nearly from the outset.

If the Boston Red Sox are going to get one back in NY and eventually win this series, Price will need to get his redemption.

Alex Cora shook up his lineup, too.

Joe Kelly doused the Price flames with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief and Ryan Brasier didn't allow a hit in his one inning on the mound.

Red Sox: 1B Mitch Moreland had what Cora called aggressive treatment on his right hamstring, which forced him from Game 2.

It simply wasn't the way David Price wanted to start the 2018 playoffs.

In 162 relevant games between 2012 and 2017, teams coming off a win in the series were 80-82 in the following games.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez continued his assault of Sox lefthander Davis Price, and is now 7-for-14 in his career against the former Cy Young victor, with home runs accounting for six of his seven hits.

Sanchez also had a solo shot in the second inning to give NY a 2-0 lead. No one saw it land as the belt easily cleared the Green Monster in left field and was clocked at 479 feet. It went down as the second-longest postseason homer in the Statcast era (since 2015). But, against the Yankees and on the postseason stage, Price's mental toughness is what got him yanked more than his physical ability and talent. That home run against David Price was nearly a reminder. The six-pack ties Jose Bautista for the most any batter has hit off of the 33-year-old starter.

"I've got to say they have a good lineup, and I need to hit my spots, don't do mistakes, and try to go deep in my game".

Xander Bogaerts hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

The Red Sox decided with the former in favor of moving up Nathan Eovaldi to start in Game 3 instead of his originally scheduled Game 4 start. He pitched four and 4 2/3 innings in two starts in last year's ALCS, then was pulled in the fifth inning in Wednesday's wild-card game against the Oakland A's.

In any other game, in any other situation and against any other team, perhaps Cora would've stuck with Price longer. "But I can tell you it's an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as him, a legend of baseball", Sanchez said. His 7-0 recorded with a 2.69 ERA since being dealt to NY by the Blue Jays on July 31 was just part of it.

Devers, Holt and Vazquez are a combined 3-for-35 lifetime against Yankees Game 3 starter Luis Severino.

The potential good news for Happ?

Game 5 would be back in Boston on Thursday, if necessary. I've certainly been guilty of it myself, and anyone eager to prove me a waffling fool upon reading this post could dig up countless examples of this author stating - in print, online, in radio interviews, in real-life conversations - that playoff wins like the Yankees' series-evening victory in Boston on Saturday might represent some greater change in the course of the series. In fact, six of the eight teams have players that were in Dunedin in spring training.
