Yankee bats set up date with Red Sox

Liam Hendriks made history as the first Australian pitcher to start in a Major League Baseball post-season game but his Oakland Athletics were beaten 7-2 by the New York Yankees.

Yankees fans were chanting "We want Boston!" during the late innings.

Aaron Judge walked past Boston's Fenway Park clubhouse early Sunday morning, Frank Sinatra's rendition of "New York, New York" blaring from a boom box atop the wheelie bag he was pulling with his left hand.

On Tuesday, as the Yankees worked out at the Stadium, Boone said of Severino, "Hopefully he pitches deep into this game".

The stakes: The victor plays the Red Sox in the AL Division Series beginning Friday in Boston.

The Yankees never trailed thanks to Judge, who hit a 2-1 fastball from Liam Hendriks (0-1) into the left field bleachers.

But the Red Sox are really, really good.

Once hailed for making baseball in Baltimore relevant again, the 62-year-old Showalter is out of a job after a season in which the Orioles finished 47-115, 61 games behind Boston in the AL East.

It came after the Yankees applied the finishing touches of a 7-2 victory in the American League wild-card game, thus ensuring that their 100-win juggernaut would preserve its chance to stake its claim on greatness.

Yankees-Red Sox is back.

These three players are not just the top three on the A's, they all will be receiving AL MVP votes this year. A bench-clearing brawl led to suspensions and fines, but Auston won't be around for a rematch - he was dealt to Minnesota in July.

A Red Sox-Yankees ALDS would without a doubt be a box-office slugfest.

The Red Sox have said Sale and Price will be followed by Rick Porcello in Games 2 and 3 and Nathan Eovaldi in Game 4, if necessary.

Just another in a long history of bad blood between rivals a little more than 200 miles apart.

NY added four in the sixth against Fernando Rodney and Blake Treinen, perhaps the best closer in baseball this season. Then at Yankee Stadium in 1976, New York's Lou Piniella charged into Fisk at the plate, and Boston pitcher Bill Lee was body-slammed during the fighting and wound up with a broken collarbone.

Betances is pegged to be a huge part of the Yankees' bullpen going forward this postseason, and if there's any other thing to worry about, it might be the troublesome cut on his finger that has caused him to bleed during games a few times down the stretch.

Zimmer, a former Boston manager and then a Yankees coach, ran across the infield and lunged at Martinez during the fighting. So instead of going with another starter, such as Mike Fiers or Edwin Jackson, the A's chose to go with an opener, Liam Hendriks, then have that deep, powerful bullpen ready for literally the second inning. While the game's evolution has made the pitching win increasingly irrelevant, no one will complain about Betances getting credited with the win on this one. Allowing just two runs in five innings to that offense, in that ballpark, was the best-case scenario for the A's.

The prediction: The Yankees have home-field advantage over a surprise team in the wild-card game - we also saw this in 2015 and 2017, and the Yankees split.
