As Nepal carries out its first National Mental Health Survey, some 2.2 million Nepalis, aged between 16 - 40 years, are estimated to suffer from mental health issues and the cases are rising among children, psychiatrists have warned.
"There are only 0.58 beds per 100,000 population in Nepal to avail mental health services while hospitals providing mental health services are only available in urban areas", said Dr Basudev Karki, psychiatrist at Mental Hospital in Patan.
The Health Secretary then insisted: "In the last few years, mental health budgets have gone up". He urged those close to people with mental illness to remain patient and supportive. The theme for this year is "Young people and mental health in a changing world".
This expo, held on the Brian Lara Promenade, Independence Square in Port of Spain, saw lines of people seeking more information on the importance of maintaining mental health, and ways of detecting mental illness.
WHO, in its recommendations, called for the integration of mental health into primary healthcare. It cites a stat from the World Health Organization that suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people, aged 15 to 29.

Adebowale identified anger, depression, harmful use of alcohol, behavioural change, drug abuse and some other factors responsible for mental illness among Nigerians from the age of 14.
Looking to the future, the pair calls upon readers and national governments to put more funding into mental health support, before highlighting a collection of research on how to promote and protect mental health and treat mental illness, which will also be published this week in the The Lancet medical journal.

Without factoring in suicide, mental health issues are projected to reduce economic growth in both India and China by more than $9 trillion respectively between 2016 and 2030.
