Annual mammogram appointments can lead to the early detection of breast cancer, which is key for less invasive and perhaps more affordable treatment options, local health professionals say.

The Thomasville and Davidson County communities are invited to support the initiative by purchasing pink ribbons for $1 each in honor or memory of a loved one.

From 2006 to 2013, a 2017 study published in Cancer Causes & Control showed that the mortality rate from breast cancer among black women dropped by 13.9 percent, driving it below the national average.

Breast cancer is common among women worldwide, with millions being diagnosed every year.

With two years left on the grant, there's a lot of work still to be done, Murphy said, yet they are confident the efforts will continue to save lives.

"Finally early diagnosis by doing things and in this case it is breast self examination so that you can identify a lump as early as possible and then you can see your healthcare provider who will administer the right treatment".

Montefiore is a huge supporter of the non-competitive Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, which takes place all over the country, mostly on Sunday, October 21. Women who started menstruating (having periods) younger than age 12 have a higher risk of breast cancer later in life.

Surgery has components; there is the breast sparing surgery where a specific mass is removed by taking out the lesion.

Many women with stage IV often have to stop working to navigate the intricacies of clinical trials as they adjust to the idea that their time is likely limited.

"To my knowledge, there are no documented incidents of a mammogram exposure resulting in a breast cancer in anybody", he said. Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of breast cells.
