Accelerate surges late to win Breeders' Cup Classic

Enable battled from behind to win the $4 million Breeders' Cup Turf in thrilling fashion at Churchill Downs on Saturday, becoming the first horse to win this race and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the same year. It was trainer Mike McCarthy's first Cup win and City of Light's fifth win in 10 starts.

Dettori, though, left Kentucky having won on two of his three rides, demonstrating once again that his hunger and instincts are sharper than ever, almost a quarter of a century on from his first Breeders' Cup win, also at Churchill Downs, in 1994.

Line Of Duty did bump Uncle Benny late on, causing an anxious wait for connections as the stewards launched an inquiry, but the Charlie Appleby-trained juvenile kept the race, much to the relief of Buick.

Trained in Southern California by last year's Triple Crown victor, Bob Baffert, Game victor got a bit of a slow start in the Juvenile and jockey Joel Rosario had to settle him behind the leaders early.

With 222 points, Roaring Lion now holds a clear lead in both the Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier 3-year-old colt categories. He was the fourth Juvenile victor for Bob Baffert, who also trained Vindication (2002), Midshipman (2008) and New Year's Day (2013) to wins in that race.

There was some bumping and grinding for Game Winner on the way to victory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He won at 20% in his first year as a trainer, cracked the million-dollar mark in earnings in his third season, and went over the two-million-dollar mark for the first time in 2012. East, a Frankel colt, came from the clouds to finish second, best of a very good European contingent.

Trained by Peter Miller, Stormy Liberal won his fourth straight race and 12th overall in 30 career starts.

"When I got to the backside I tried to be in the clear, which is what he likes to do".

It was a triumph of "sheer determination" and "class", according to Gosden, who revealed she had an injury-disrupted year including a temperature in the weeks before the Arc. Asked if the filly now is a superstar, Brown said, "She is on her way".

Newspaperofrecord, an Irish-bred filly, is by Lope de Vega, out of the Holy Roman Emperor mare Sunday Times - solid English and Irish breeding.

"It was obviously a point of irritation for me", Sadler said. I thought he did very well because I didn't have a straightforward trip myself.

"We've got the big one", he said.

Bulletin showed excellent early speed to make all in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Chelsea Cloisters mounted a determined challenge early in the stretch run, then could not sustain the effort and settled for second.

She will be ridden by regular jockey Frankie Dettori and will go off from the favored stall two in the one-and-a half-mile test at the famous Louisville racecourse.

Gunnevera, Thunder Snow and early pace setter Mendelssohn made things interesting before 70,423, an upside to the absence of horse racing's 13th Triple Crown victor from the Classic.

"He broke really well", Rosario said of Accelerate. "We're prepared for the worst and hope for the best".
