Snell, deGrom win Cy Young awards

Snell led the majors with 21 victories, while deGrom lead the majors with a 1.70 ERA despite a 10-9 record. Phillies righty Aaron Nola rounded out the top three vote-getters. DeGrom got 29 first-place votes and 207 points from members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

The IBWAA (Internet Baseball Writers of America Association) votes in a separate election from the BBWAA (Baseball Writers of America Association), who determines the victor of the award. "When you're doing something, I don't know if you realize it as much as people watching". Snell and Price are the only Cy Young winners in Rays history. Yet the Mets were 11-18 in those games and 14-18 overall with deGrom on the mound. The Mets rarely gave him any run support this season, which is why he won just 10 of his 32 starts.

With Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets winning the NL Cy Young award, he and Snell joined Bob Gibson and other exclusive company thanks to their sub-2.00 ERA. But deGrom has pitched so well and consistent that it is not outrageous to call him the best player in NY. That year, he was named an All-Star for the first time and finished seventh in the Cy Young balloting. It helped that deGrom was also able to rack up 269 punch-outs.

Luis Severino received one fifth place vote and finished ninth in the voting in his second full big league season. Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber (4, 71) was third and Boston left-hander Chris Sale (2, 59) was fourth.

Despite plenty of competition, it's hard to argue against Snell winning it.

Looking forward, while the Rays are more experimental with pitching roles than any club in the league, there's little doubt that Snell will be handled like a traditional front-of-the-rotation workhorse. "His competitive spirit is unlike anything I've ever seen and simply the best season I've ever witnessed from a pitcher". "The team didn't end up where we wanted to be this past season, but you kind of set personal goals". For the Cy Young, I get to decide how much things should matter in relation to one another, be it innings pitched, run prevention, strikeout totals, wins, team wins, general consistency, etc.

The 2018 AL Cy Young Award debate was anything but one-sided.
