Maple Leafs sign William Nylander to last-second 6-year extension

Hyman added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal Toronto's fourth straight victory and Minnesota's third loss in a row.

Before joining the Maple Leafs, Nylander played in 75 regular-season games with the AHL's Toronto Marlies and registered 77 points (32 goals, 45 assists). The Nylander camp preferred to use as a comparison Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl, who signed an eight-year deal with an annual average value of $8.5 million as a 22-year-old.

The 22-year-old forward was a restricted free agent and would not have been eligible to play in the National Hockey League this season if he did not sign before the deadline.

"He likes to compare a team to a band and you have drummers in the band, and he called me the drummer".

With one talented forward now back in the fold, adding yet another high-end offensive piece has the Leafs excited for a few reasons.

"That's a great game by us", said Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk.

Nylander does not have a no-trade clause in his new contract until the final year, which includes a list of 10 teams he can put on a no-trade list.

"I sprinted into the room and told them I knew what happened, but didn't tell anyone", Rielly said, jokingly.

"When he does get back here it's going make us even deadlier".

"A couple guys came early and we were kind of all sitting here, [Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock] popped out of the office and said, 'We signed him, '" Marner said.

Auston Matthews and Tyler Ennis also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won four in a row. Gaudreau went from scoring 30 goals and 78 points in 79 games in 2015-16 to just 18 goals and 61 points in 72 games in the season following his brief holdout. I think we always tried to stay optimistic and have faith that our offers were fair and that they were coming from a good place as well and that, in the end, him missing a full season and having it go across 5 o'clock today wouldn't have been good for anybody. He also had seven goals and seven assists in 19 career Calder Cup playoff games.

Nylander was drafted 8th overall by Toronto in 2014. At best, Nylander will play 55 games, so it's quite possible he only reaches the 40 point mark.
