This allowed Broward Deputy Scot Peterson, who was assigned to the high school where a mass shooting occurred in February 2018, to take cover outside instead of entering the building to save the lives of children.

"This was about politics, not Parkland", Israel said.

"Sheriff Israel has been twice elected by Broward County residents", said Maj.

Minutes after DeSantis' announcement, Israel said he would fight the suspension.

"I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel's political grave", DeSantis said Friday, "but suffice it to say the massacre might never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the sheriff's department". "He failed to protect Floridians and visitors during the tragic Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017", DeSantis said in a statement.

Two days after the gubernatorial election, SFWMD appointees voted to extend a lease for sugar farmers - who discharge a hefty dose of their nutrient-laden water into Lake O - despite requests from DeSantis' environmental transition team member U.S. Rep Brian Mast to delay the vote until DeSantis could review it. Kaplan said they are exploring their options and developing a strategy.

A state-appointed commission has identified multiple failings in Israel's agency's response to the shooting.

"I think BSO needs a different leader", said Debbie Hixon whose husband Chris was killed in the MSD massacre.

"They had all those other people that reacted very similar so to me that's more of a systemic issue than it is an individual acting on his own", she said.

You know the Stoneman Douglas Commission when they were talking to deputies they learned from these deputies that the deputies could not remember the last time that they had active shooter training or what kind of training it was.

"For these reasons, I am suspending Sheriff Israel from office effective immediately", he wrote.
