Omar Thanks Jewish Colleagues for 'Educating' Her on Anti-Semitism

A new Democratic congresswoman is facing a firestorm of criticism for suggesting U.S. politicians only support Israel because of lobby money.

Democrat Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of which Omar is a member, called it "shocking to hear a Member of Congress invoke the anti-Semitic trope of 'Jewish money'".

"Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes", Omar wrote in a statement posted to Twitter.

Freshman House Democrat Ilhan Omar, one of the few Muslims in Congress, said Monday she "unequivocally" apologizes for tweets that were condemned by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats as anti-Semitic.

"Bad form, Congresswoman. That's the second anti-Semitic trope you've tweeted", she added. "Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself", Mr Rose said.

On Friday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., urged Democratic leadership to admonish Omar and Tlaib due to their backing for the BDS movement, which is meant to put economic pressure on Israel to end its occupation of the West Bank.

Omar wrote back to Clinton on Twitter, saying she would be "happy to talk".

Omar has drawn criticism from tweets she posted regarding Israel. In the U.S., we're allowed to criticize our own government: certainly foreign governments.

He said if Democratic leaders don't take action, he might act on his own. "Now she tweets that if Members of Congress support Israel then they were bought off by Jews".

"House Democrat leadership continues to be silent as Americans from both sides of the aisle condemn this rhetoric and pattern of behavior", he charged.

Ilhan Omar immediately apologize for the comments. In 2009, two congressmen forgot to remove AIPAC from a letter they sent to President Barack Obama about the Middle East peace process.

Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.). "This continued anti-Semitic trope from Omar is grossly wrong".

"I fully expect that when we disagree on the Foreign Affairs Committee, we will debate policy on the merits and never question members' motives or resort to personal attacks", he said. Pence and other deeply conservative white Christian evangelicals now driving American policy toward Israel and the Palestinians are playing a very long game that extends far beyond one news cycle. Her spokesman told Politico yesterday that the tweets "speak for themselves".

She faced Islamaphobic bigotry in her first few weeks in office and has repeatedly denounced discrimination against Jews. Both have been vocal advocates for Palestinians and support the "Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions" (or BDS) movement to punish Israel economically. She also previously criticized the government of Israel.

Weiss's column treated Omar's tweet about Israel's "evil doings of Israel" as a one-off. The tweet appeared to suggest McCarthy's pro-Israel stance is motivated by money.

MI congresswoman Tlaib said on Saturday that she wanted to highlight "issues such as racism and Israel's violations of the Palestinians' human rights".

Today Omar became an inconvenience to the Democratic Party establishment. " - the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful lobby that channels campaign donations to sympathetic legislators".

AIPAC is a significant player in terms of lobbying, accounting for the vast majority of lobbying spending by pro-Israel groups, spending more than $3.5 million in 2018. That referred to a Senate bill that would have permitted state and local governments to ban contracts with any companies or groups who support a boycott of Israel.
