Juventus not just Ronaldo, says Atletico coach Simeone

In a match where Atletico had more trouble with video review than Ronaldo, the Spanish team kept the Portugal star in check but had to overcome two key VAR decisions to defeat Juventus 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League's round of 16. Juventus enters the game trailing 2-0 and probably needs Ronaldo to continue terrorizing Atletico Madrid in order to advance.

Ronaldo met Joao Cancelo's cross with another powerful header and although Oblak clawed the ball away, goal line technology showed that it had crossed the line by centimetres and the referee signalled a goal. And while that is a respectable tally by all accounts, it doesn't hold a candle to his extraordinary goal scoring feats of 450 goals in 438 games at Real Madrid.

"We know that we are facing a great team".

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini, making his 500th appearance for the Italian champions, had the ball in the net after four minutes following a goalmouth scramble but it was disallowed for foul by Ronaldo on goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Ronaldo did get the second goal three minutes after the break.

"Ronaldo played a good match, he is used to this type of match", Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

Ronaldo is a modern day Champions League god, and owns a bunch of impressive records. The home fans erupted on the final whistle and the players rushed to Ronaldo.

Juventus have progressed in a Champions League knockout tie having lost the first leg for the first time since 2005-06 v Werder Bremen.

CR7 has scored 22 goals in 32 career games against Atleti, constantly a thorn in the side of Los Rojiblancos.

Ronaldo went close again shortly before halftime when he again outjumped everyone but headed Leonardo Spinazzola's cross wide of the right post. It shocked the fans inside Wanda Metropolitano.
