In a response to a Twitter use, Canterbury Police said it had not had any calls but had received calls about social media outages in the past.

The problems were happening across the globe, with large parts of the USA and Europe affected, according to outage tracking website Down Detector.

Instagram users have reported being unable to refresh the feed, log in, or access the desktop site.

Outages for large internet platforms like Facebook or YouTube aren't unusual, but in the past they have typically restored service within an hour or two. "This afternoon, "#facebookdown" was the top trending topic on Twitter.

Facebook did not offer any details on what was causing the interruption of services, which were still occurring after 8 p.m. Israel time (2 p.m. eastern).
