Measles outbreak in New Zealand's Canterbury widens to 20

The Texas Health Department has confirmed a case of the measles in Collin County.

Measles is a disease that can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia (infection of the lungs), and even death. The highly contagious disease is spread by coughing, sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nose or throat secretions.

As per the CDC, which is the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one dose of one particular vaccine called as the MMR vaccine is said to be nearly 93% effective and if two doses are taken, then the effectiveness is increased by nearly 4% thus making it nearly 97% effective, which is incredible.

"Immunisation is the only sure way to avoid getting measles".

"Unimmunized people who come within two meters (6.56 ft) of an infectious person, however briefly, have a 90-percent chance of contracting measles", the Board said. In Clark County, WA, at least 50 cases of measles - 47 of those were not vaccinated.

Japan is reporting a measles outbreak this year as health officials there say 258 cases have been recorded in the first two months of 2019.

Children and young adults (age range 5 years to 28 years) who are either not immunised or who have only received one MMR dose to date.

The four-year-old MMR can be brought forward to no sooner than four weeks after the previous MMR.

Health centres in the region have been in short supply of vaccines since the outbreak in late February, with 3000 doses shipped last week and 18,000 more expected to arrive in coming days.

Measles cases are on the rise nationwide, as more parents choose to not vaccinate their children.

"We have enough vaccine", said VCH spokesperson Tiffany Akins.

While on February 14, World Health Organization also warned that at least 922 children and young adults have died of measles in Madagascar since October, despite a huge emergency vaccination program.

Anyone with measles symptoms or who believes they may have been exposed, can contact their usual general practice 24/7 for additional advice.
