Paramount Pictures is developing Summer Loving, a prequel to the epic 1978 musical Grease, which immortally highlighted the 50s high school love story of John Travolta's Danny and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy.
Paramount's Players division has thrown the concept, birthed from the dueling stories of summer romance told by John Travolta's Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy Olssen in the song "Summer Nights", into development. The writer is a long-time collaborator of Tim Burton, starting with the script for 2003's Big Fish and continuing on through Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Frankenweenie.
How did Danny and Sandy meet?
It's confirmed: another Grease movie is finally, FINALLY happening! After all, the original film did include an entire song devoted to explaining the very backstory Summer Nights purports to tackle.
OMG, they are doing a Grease prequel!
A third said: "Can we not have a Grease prequel about Rizzo where she shows the world how she came to be such a badass b***h".
Summer Loving does not now have a release date.
That film has made $70 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, but will audiences flock to theaters to see a Grease prequel so many years after the original?
A sequel, released in 1982, was less well received.
