The president's comments came a day after Barr testified at a congressional hearing that he believes "spying did occur" on the campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russian Federation investigation that shadowed Trump's presidency for almost two years may have been mishandled.
Attorney General William Barr is expected to release a redacted copy of the investigation's conclusion within the next few weeks.
"What role did the dossier play?"
Earlier, Mueller finished his investigation and submitted some 400-page report to Barr.
BRIAN SCHATZ: I think the word spying could cause everybody in the cable news ecosystem to freak out.
The comments reflect how quickly attention in Washington has flipped from Trump-Russia links to whether the Russia election meddling probe itself acted inappropriately. So do you feel like it carries more weight now when it comes from the attorney general?
Donald Trump, the President of the US, stated that the investigation of Russia's interference in the USA elections was a coup attempt, as The Washington Post reported. He later said he is not sure there had been improper surveillance but will make sure proper procedures were followed. Which means that Barr didn't want to say the President is wrong - which he is, at least on the question of obstruction - in a public setting.
"Because this was an illegal witch hunt, and everybody knew it".
"What they did was treason, what they did was bad, what they did was against our constitution", Trump said without specifying who he was accusing of treason.
"What they did was treason, what they did was awful, what they did was against our Constitution", the POTUS said.
The Justice Department's inspector general has been investigating the early days of the FBI's Russian Federation probe, but Barr has said he wants to pull together the different reviews underway and see if there are remaining questions that need to be addressed. "The question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated, and I'm not suggesting it wasn't adequately predicated, but I need to explore that".
"You're not suggesting, though, that spying occurred?"
According to the New York Times a year ago, the Federal Bureau of Investigation sent an informant, an unnamed USA academic who teaches in the United Kingdom, to speak to two low-level Trump aides, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, after the agency became suspicious of the pair's Russian contacts.
'I am concerned about it and I was asked about whether there was any basis for it, and I believe there is a basis for my concern but I'm not going to discuss the basis, ' he said.
LUCAS: That's right. We know, for example, that - a court-approved surveillance against Trump campaign aide Carter Page.
She also accused Barr of doing Trump's political bidding in his testimony at the April 10 Senate hearing.
