Jeers and grimaces as jaded Manchester United are embarrassed by Cardiff City

Solskjaer is looking to his experienced players to ensure United do not struggle again next season.

Despite recording the greatest ever statistical season of his career to date, with 16 goals and 11 assists (earning himself a spot in the PFA Team of the Year in the process), Pogba has had a tumultuous season at United, including public spats with Jose Mourinho and a perceived lack of focus on the club.

Just maybe Solskjaer could be more than a caretaker.

It leaves Solskjaer with a mountain to climb to get the club back to competing for major honours, and he said the owners and the board knew the work that needed to be done. "That is not where our challenge lies, we have a long and hard way to be where we want to be".

"The big plus is the season's over, we can draw a big line under it and look forward because we know we are too far behind where we want to be - 98 and 97 points is exceptional, we're five or six behind third, fourth, fifth and that's realistically who we need to be challenging next year".

United manager Solskjaer has repeatedly expressed his frustration at the fitness levels of his players since he took over in December.

After the game, there was understandable anger from the fans as players and staffed completed the traditional end-of-season farewell ceremony. There's different reasons that players here haven't had good seasons, some have been their fault, others have been the club's fault, might be our fault.

United were clapped off by many fans today despite the shocking result, something their manager found embarrassing. In a bad moment for the club we have won some trophies.

Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia ended their United careers against Cardiff, while there are doubts over the futures of Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Juan Mata, Eric Bailly, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba. If we manage to get to February or March and being close then that's fantastic.

Although Valencia could be getting a final send-off at Old Trafford, we should play it safe and start with Young and bring the Ecuadorian on at the end if United have the lead.
