Ex-NFL player Kellen Winslow II found guilty of rape, other charges

Former NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr. - the son of a Hall of Famer who himself earned more than $40 million during his career - has been convicted of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman last year in his picturesque beach community of Encinitas, north of San Diego. On Monday, he was charged with forcible rape and lewd conduct.

'Kellen Winslow took what he wanted; he took what he wanted not from one, not from two, but from three women, ' Owens said during the trial, as quoted by Cleveland's NBC affiliate.

He was facing life in prison if convicted of all 12 charges.

After the jury sent a note saying it was deadlocked on the eight other charges, the judge sent them back to deliberate.

Deliberations are set to continue Tuesday. "Kellen Winslow took from these women again and again and again".

Winslow was selected No. 6 in the 2004 National Football League draft.

He also had unsuccessful seasons with New England Patriots and New York Jets before his career ended after the 2013-14 season. He was a one-time Pro Bowler, in 2007. At one point, he was the NFL's highest-paid tight end.

Police arrested Winslow back in June 2018. His camp said it had been a misunderstanding. The judge instructed the jurors to take as much time as they need to come to verdicts on the remaining counts.

The accusers included a hitchhiker and a homeless woman who said they'd been raped in his SUV, and a woman who said a stranger exposed himself in her yard.

A 54-year-old hitchhiker said he drove her to an Encinitas shopping centre parking lot and raped her in his Hummer in March 2018.

His famous father attended the trial every day.

Winslow, 35, didn't testify during the trial.

Prosecutor Dan Owens told the jury of eight men and four women that Winslow is a "wolf in sheep's clothing".

Winslow's attorneys say that the alleged incidents were either consensual or never occurred. She said she passed out at a party in a San Diego suburb and woke up to find Winslow assaulting her.

He's also accused of exposing himself to a woman gardening in her front yard in Cardiff, California, last summer, then exposing himself to a 77-year-old woman at a Carlsbad, California, gym while out on bail this February. Bail was revoked following his arrest in that case.
