"The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored", said BCCI in a media release. It was also the highest total conceded by Australia in the history of the World Cup.

Shikhar Dhawan had gone for a scan on Monday and the report reveals he has a hairline fracture on his left thumb. However, he didn't field and Ravindra Jadeja was his substitute. Reports then suggested that Dhawan is out of the competition with Rishabh Pant on his way to England.

Dhawan scored a match-winning knock of 117 runs off 95 balls against the defending champions Australia.

Shikhar Dhawan was hit on the thumb against Australia during ICC World Cup 2019. The injury comes as a big setback for India, as the southpaw, considered a big-game player, has an impeccable record in ICC tournaments. Consequently, no replacements would be called for now.

He played through pain after being hit on his left thumb by a rising delivery from pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile and would be sitting out of India's next match against New Zealand here on Thursday. But the team management might push for Mumbai batsman and India A captain Shreyas Iyer as he is a specialist No.4 batsman. Mick Jagger, who incidentally watched Dhawan cop the blow from a suite in the Oval, once summed up India's current predicament perfectly in a Rolling Stones song with these words-"You can't always get what you want".

With Dhawan now sidelined, KL Rahul is looking primed to open alongside Rohit Sharma.
