Israeli troops, Palestinian security in rare shootout

Israeli forces carry out detention raids across the West Bank on a near-nightly basis - including in areas, like Nablus city, that are in Area A, which technically falls under full Palestinian Authority political and security control.

The army said the incident will be reviewed.

The U.S. said Monday there has been no change to its West Bank policy after Washington's envoy to Israel stirred controversy with comments suggesting Israel has a right to annex parts of the occupied territory.

Friedman's comments elicited outrage from Palestinian officials who said they are considering filing a complaint against Friedman at the International Criminal Court (ICC). "International law prohibits the annexation of a land by force, as well as a reality imposed by occupying powers". The PLO and other Palestinian organizations called for a "popular uprising" on June 25 and 26 when the expected to launch its peace plan.

Palestinian Government Spokesman, Ibrahim Melhem said that the assault on the Palestinian Preventive Security headquarters in the city of Nablus represents an escalation of hostilities created to undermine the most significant pillars of the foundation of a Palestinian state, and jeopardize internal security.

Those moves include recognizing the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and cutting hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid to the Palestinians.
